HOW DO SAFESCAN’S COIN COUNTERS WORK?
Safescan offers precision coin counters and sorters that save you time and eliminate error. How do they do it? Let’s take a look under the hood.

HOW DO COIN COUNTERS SORT COINS?
In any given currency, each coin type has its own unique diameter and thickness ➀. Mixed-coin counters like the Safescan 1250 use automated sensors and rotating discs ➁, ➂ to accurately separate coins based on these parameters and funnel them into different receiving cups.

HOW DO COIN COUNTERS COUNT COINS?
Coin counters use physical or optical sensors to tally each coin as it passes by. For example, the Safescan 1250 uses a robust dual optical sensor system—one sensor pair per coin type—to count each coin as it falls into the appropriate cup. Each tally is stored separately in device memory for later use and review

CAN YOU FILL COIN ROLLS USING A COIN COUNTER?
Some higher-end counters have additional features to make the process as fast and painless as possible. For example, for euro coins, the Safescan 1250 has a second set of collection cups shaped like coin rolls plus a batch function that lets you enter a preset number for each type of coin. The machine automatically pauses when any coin tube reaches its quota, so you can pour its contents into a coin roll.

HOW DOES WEIGHT-BASED COIN COUNTING WORK?
You can also count coins by weight instead of size. High-precision money counting scales like the Safescan 6165 and 6185 use finely calibrated load cells—devices that create an electrical signal whose magnitude is directly proportional to the force being measured—to weigh several coins at one time. The scale stores a detailed table of weights in its memory for every supported currency and denomination, which it uses to accurately calculate the number of items it is weighing. (See our page on counting money by weight if you’d like to know more about how the process works.)
